A Pressure Sand Filter (PSF) is a robust, cost-effective water filtration system designed to remove suspended solids, turbidity, and particulate impurities from water using a bed of graded sand. Housed in a pressurized vessel, the filter forces water through layers of coarse to fine sand, capturing contaminants and delivering cleaner, clearer water for industrial, commercial, and municipal applications.
Unlike open gravity filters, a Pressure Sand Filter operates under high pressure, allowing for faster filtration rates and compact designs. It is commonly used as a primary filtration step or as a pre-treatment before advanced processes such as reverse osmosis (RO), softening, or disinfection.
How It Works:
Raw water enters the filter under pressure and passes through the sand bed. Suspended particles are trapped in the voids between sand grains. Clean water exits from the bottom and is routed for further treatment or use. When the pressure drop across the filter reaches a defined level, backwashing is triggered to remove the accumulated dirt, restoring filtration efficiency.
It is often used as a pre-treatment to reverse osmosis, softeners, or activated carbon filters and as a post-treatment in tertiary stages of ETP/STP.
